The performance of a certain horse, in the 1973 Grand National changed horse racing forever. Red Rum along with his trainer Ginger McCain became household names overnight, and pretty much single handedly saved the Grand National. The whole story, as it unfolded year on year, was a dream come true for Aintree Racecourse, and every sports editor in the land. Infact the only people who weren’t glad to see Red Rum at Aintree, year on year, were the bookies. Between his first win in 1973 and 1977 he won the race three times and finished second twice. His victory in the 1973 Grand National, when he came to collar the Aussie horse Crisp on the line, is regarded by many as the best ever Grand National. This win, along with his future exploits, ensured the popularity of the great race.
This is one of two photos in our galleries showing work rider Billy Ellison riding Red Rum on Southport Sands. Red Rum is the horse closest to the camera. i absolutely love both photos, and i hope you do to.
